Enlarge Your World – False Promise of Numbers

Enlarge Your World – False Promise of Numbers.

Lakeland, Florida – Where are you going to spend it?

Advice posts keep cropping up on social feeds offering financial wisdom. Financial gurus are offering a future glimpse into a post-Covid scenario. Meme’s provide that quick glimmer of irrational impulse buying opportunities. All with the intent to help you spend your federal stimulus check.

Beyond the dollar sign conversations of our federal government’s stimulus program, we are wrestling through the Covid-19 mixed-bag of media statistical analysis. These fragmented bytes continue to quench the appetite of information gluttony.

In all of this, a number seems to be the solution to every problem we face. The famous “Tears for Fears” song Mad World was recently remixed by the original singer and his daughter. This a very timely message as we wrestle through this transition. The next to the last lyric is how we make this transition—Enlarge Your World. My hopes are that we find a way to break the daily race of going nowhere and not fall prey to a false promise of a number.

In this daily spin of virtual Zoom meetings and screen-based learning, how can we look beyond the numbers? How can we enlarge our world? It happens when we think of others more than ourselves. Just as the lyric states, “went to school and I was very nervous.” Our kids are just as nervous as we are. Enlarging our world happens when we as parents take time to help our kids. It happens when we sit and discuss the ethical dilemma of man-made genetic mutations with our 15-year-old. Yes—this happens at our dinner table thanks to her science class. 🙂 Lastly, It happens when we affirm our educational leaders in the middle of this transition.

As a faculty member right in the middle of this chaos, it may feel like we are going in circles. This virtual landscape can be a worn-out place. It’s when that one student subtly states this is one of their favorite classes throughout the undergraduate experience. Or, you receive word that your advisee received a full fellowship to a legacy graduate school.

That’s when you recognize it’s not about the false promise of a number. The value of serving and encouraging others supersedes any number. How can we encourage those around us?
